About FinalCostGuide: Our Team, Data & Mission

Who We Are

FinalCostGuide is an independent funeral pricing transparency project built by David Foster, a licensed funeral director with 12 years of experience in funeral home operations and pre-need planning. After spending over a decade inside the funeral industry, David founded FinalCostGuide to address the single biggest problem facing bereaved families: the lack of transparent, comparable pricing information at a time when they are most vulnerable to overspending.

David has served over 2,000 families as a funeral director and pre-need planning consultant. He holds active NFDA certification as a Crematory Operator (CCO) and maintains his Funeral Director license in Ohio (#FD-44521). He is a member of the Funeral Consumers Alliance (FCA) and advocates for pricing transparency and consumer rights in the funeral industry.

Our Data & Methodology

All pricing data on FinalCostGuide is sourced from:

  1. General Price Lists (GPLs): Under the FTC Funeral Rule, every funeral home in the US must provide an itemized GPL to anyone who asks — in person, by phone, or by mail. We collect and compile these lists to build city-level and state-level pricing ranges.
  2. NFDA Annual Survey: The National Funeral Directors Association publishes annual pricing data based on a national survey of funeral homes. We use this as a cross-reference and to fill gaps where individual GPLs are unavailable.
  3. Direct Verification: For high-population metro areas, we make periodic price verification calls to confirm that published ranges reflect current pricing. Prices are updated every 6-12 months.

We display the low, average, and high price for each service type to give families a realistic picture of the market — not just the cheapest option or the industry average alone.

Why Funeral Pricing Transparency Matters

The FTC Funeral Rule has required itemized pricing since 1984, yet most families still don't comparison-shop for funeral services the way they would for any other major purchase. The reasons are understandable — grief, time pressure, and discomfort with the topic. But the financial consequences are real: the price difference between funeral homes in the same city can be $3,000-8,000 for the exact same services.

FinalCostGuide exists to give families the information they need to make informed decisions, at their own pace, from the privacy of their home. We believe pricing transparency leads to better outcomes — for families, for honest funeral providers, and for the funeral profession as a whole.
